The "Igloo", a domed dwelling arose in the 1970s with Mr Marcello Serini about the time when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin. The original drawings were soon filed away as it was obvious that the idea was ahead of its time. In 1998 Marcello decided that the time was approaching for this type of building structure, and added "The Moat System" to render it self-sustainable. Marcello was then active as “Serini Consultants Social and Environmental Planners” in Armidale, NSW. In 2002 he registered his design and patented it in 2007.
Recently Marcello with his business partner Mrs Senada Pita registered the company “Spatium XXl Environmental Constructions Pty Ltd” (trading under the business name “The GlobeStar Domes”). The original idea has now evolved to the stage where calculations and drawings are confirmed and modified through computerised modelling. In 2016 Marcello joined Monash University as adjunct research associate; giving him and his team opportunity to test and validate the structure’s safety against natural extremes; and to fine tune other parameters such as air flows, internal climate control, wastes handling and other functionalities.
