The idea of a domed dwelling arose in the 1970s with Marcello Serini, prior to Cyclone Tracy devastating Darwin. The original drawings were soon filed away as it was obvious that the idea was ahead of its time. In 1998 Marcello decided that the time was approaching for this type of building structure, and added the moat system to render it self-sustainable. Marcello, then active as “Serini Consultants Social and Environmental Planners” in Armidale, NSW, patented the design in 2007.
In 2018 Marcello Serini (BA.M.Env. Sc), with his business partner Mrs Senada Pita (MIEAust CPEng), registered the company “Spatium XXl Environmental Constructions Pty Ltd” (trading under the business name “The GlobeStar Domes”). The original idea had now evolved to the stage where calculations and drawings were confirmed and modified through computerised modelling. In 2016 Marcello joined Monash University as adjunct research associate giving him and his team the opportunity to test and validate the structure’s safety against natural extremes and to fine tune other parameters such as air flows, internal climate control, wastes handling and other functionalities. Unfortunately, COVID terminated the evolution of the project.
